Dr. Randall W. Monty Bio
Dr. Randall W. Monty is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Composition, & Literacy Studies in the Department of Writing & Language Studies, where he teaches classes on professional and technical writing, rhetorical theory, historiography, and spatial literacy. In 2008, he earned a master’s degree in English from the University of Texas — Pan American while teaching middle school in Donna, Texas.
Dr. Monty’s scholarship focuses on the intersections of political and educational discourse, particularly in writing centers and science writing. He has collaborated with faculty from programs like Occupational Therapy, Business & Entrepreneurship, Engineering, Translation & Interpreting, and the University Library on various student and faculty writing initiatives. He is currently the Secretary of the UTRGV Faculty Senate. He also teaches professional writing workshops with UTRGV’s Certified Public Manager program in the office of Continuing Education.
Prior to joining the Office of Curriculum and Institutional Assessment as a Faculty Fellow, Dr. Monty was the Associate Director of the UTRGV Writing Center, where he coordinated its student success and academic assessment initiatives for SACSCOC regional accreditation. He also chaired the South Central Writing Centers Association Conference and the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing. He has previously partnered with refugee and asylum shelters and nature centers in the Rio Grande Valley.
