Advisory #1: Remnants of Tropical Storm Harvey
Tuesday, August 22, 2017. 6:42 PM
Good afternoon,
The remnants of former Tropical Cyclone Harvey continue to move across the Yucatan peninsula and into the Bay of Campeche today and into the Gulf of Mexico later where it is forecast to regenerate into a tropical cyclone, but intensity at this point is uncertain. Several conference calls with the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), National Weather Service Brownsville (NWS-Brownsville) and Rio Grande Valley officials have occurred this morning and this afternoon so that the UTRGV community could be properly informed from official sources. Additionally, Cameron County will provide additional information and guidance tomorrow morning when they have more definitive weather forecasts as to storm track and intensity.
The latest report this afternoon from the National Weather Service Office in Brownsville is attached for your review. Current impact timing is Friday 12AM to Friday Sunset. While RGV impacts are still uncertain, beach flooding and significant rain is highly likely.
At this point it is still difficult to define exactly where the impacts will occur, however, preparation for this storm’s impact should include:
- Review your emergency plans.
- Make sure that emergency contact numbers for your friends and family are up to date.
- Plan for possible heavy rain and flooding. Flooding is always a strong potential with tropical system rains; especially in poor drainage areas.
- The potential for Tropical Storm force winds should be considered in all planning.
- Monitor weather advisories from the National Weather Service, storm advisories from UTRGV’s Office of Emergency Preparedness and stay tuned to local media reports.
- Please review all activities, especially outdoor events throughout UTRGV campuses, that may be impacted by this evolving weather system.
UTRGV’s [Office of Emergency Preparedness] OEP will continue to monitor and participate in all storm briefings and relay updated information to the campus community, as necessary.
