Artist Statement

personal logoI was born under the roof of a family with an artistic spirit repressed by the overwhelming emotional censorship of the time and yet I believe that to this day I carry those dreams that at some point got stuck along the way. I know that since I was a child I have had a very dreamy and at the same time artistic spirit, so choosing art from other careers was not a surprise. However, for me, who grew up traditional and old, deciding to study graphic design and enjoy it, was a huge surprise. On the other hand, growing up under two cultural identities has been a challenge. The uncertainty of not knowing which side to belong to is a constant question that arises from time to time and it is inevitable that it will come to the surface. My roots are in Mexico, but I was born in the United States but the spirit of the artist that I have carried for generations tells me that I am both and neither. For me, graphic design is that spirit of the artist adapting to the constant changes due to circumstances. It is the duality of belonging and at the same time being the change. Graphic design is a gateway to many paths that are related to art and technology and all of that in some way has called me since I can remember. Perhaps I knew of this igniting fascination during an art exhibition inside a museum I visited when I was little that touched my heart with the vibrant colors and brush strokes.

However, this connection resurfaced later in the constant visits to beauty salons with my mother. While she was busy getting her beauty treatment, I would browse through the magazines where the layout and arrangement of words caught my attention. I didn't understand the importance and complexity behind it then, but it was just the beginning of it all. The last approach I had with design was realizing how much I would look up to billboards and fast-food logos while I was in the car. The sudden realization of all of this forged my journey into the world of art and design and took a unique path—intimately interwoven with the essence of who I am. My creative process involves passion, creativity, and solid research into the concepts I tackle. Recognizing the profound significance of my identity in shaping my work, I find inspiration in the artistic genes that run in my family. I found comfort and familiarity in art and was hooked by the emotion and storytelling. It led me to explore communication and design. Traveling, flipping through magazines, and passing towering billboards marked this path in a peculiar way that perhaps was not in my plans, but it was in the universe. Each creation sparks more inspiration, pushing me to dive into the world of design daily.
