Frequently Asked Questions


Question: How Long does it take to complete the MFA
Answer: One can complete 42 hours in 5 semesters


Question: Do I need to enroll full time?
Answer: No, our students who are already working full time may choose to take only one or two courses per semester. Courses are usually offered in the late afternoon or in the evening for students who work full time during the day


Question: Can I get credit for grad courses previously taken at other institutions or in other departments?
Answer: Yes, you can transfer up to 9 hours of graduate school credits if they fit the MFA degree plan.


Question: Are there opportunities for students to publish their work?
Answer: All students are encouraged to publish and faculty regularly shares information about publication venues.


Question: How long will it take to receive a decision on my application to the program?
Answer: When all application materials are submitted online decisions on acceptances are made quickly by the MF Admissions Committee. Application deadlines are April 1 of the following fall semester and October 1 for the following spring semester.


Question: Will the MFA courses help me become a better writer?
Answer: Indubitably.


Question: Does the program offer an opportunity to write in Spanish?
Answer: Yes, a number of literature and creative writing courses are offered in Spanish.


Question: Is there financial support for students?
Answer: Yes, there are Graduate Assistantships, Teaching Assistantships, and scholarships, though these are all limited.


Question: Are students welcome to participate in the literary journal riverSedge?
Answer: Yes, students gain real world skills in copyediting, advertising, and judging literary work by serving on the riverSedge Editorial Board and reading committees.


Question: When can I apply?
Answer: Anytime but deadline for Fall admission is April 1 and deadline the Spring admission is October 1 each year.
