Amalia Ortiz is a spoken word performer who incorporates music into performances. She appeared on three seasons of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO and the NAACP Image Awards on FOX. She was awarded the 2020 American Book Award for Oral Literature. She received a CIty of San Antonio Individual Artist Grant and a Democratizing Racial Justice Artist Residency through the Mellon Foundation to complete her latest project/album, "Punkera Diatribes" with Las Hijas de la Madre. She is a graduate of UTRGV's MFA in Creative Writing Program and also completed a graduate certificate in Mexican American Studies.

Cyrus Cassells, TX Poet Laureate 2021, is the author of numerous poetry collections and is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Lannan Foundation, the Academy of American Poets, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Rockefeller Foundation. His reading is part of the College of Fine Arts / UTRGV Arts Distinguished Artist Series. The College of Fine Arts organized the following opportunity for students and the community with TX Poet Laureate 2021:

MFA student J. Villanueva will be reading from his work and leading a discussion today from 2-4pm, open to all. The event is sponsored by the Military & Veterans Success Center here at UTRGV.
While this hybrid Reading and Discussion with Ada Limón and Lupe Mendez takes place from 12pm-1:30pm CT in the Student Union Theater and via Webinar, we will begin a little sooner with lunch in the Ballroom at 11:20am. Come by early and grab something to eat! After the presentation, we will return to the Ballroom at 1:45pm for an in-person Writing & Performance Workshop with Lupe Mendez.
