Research Areas

Agriculture and Food Sciences
Our Agriculture and Food Sciences combines student-centered research and community engagement in various projects that investigates soil health, invasive species, sustainable agriculture, and the promotion of local food systems in South Texas and beyond.

Climate Science
Our Climate Science research program investigates atmospheric processes, greenhouse gases, and climate change impacts. Through data analysis and modeling, we aim to understand global warming trends, predict future climate scenarios, and support effective policies for climate resilience and sustainability.

Conservation Science
Our Conservation Science research program studies biodiversity, ecosystem health, and human impact on natural habitats. Our program develops strategies for preserving species and restoring ecosystems, supporting sustainable management practices to safeguard Earth’s biological resources for future generations.

Earth Science
Our Earth Science program explores the planet’s physical processes, studying geology, oceanography, atmospheric science, and environmental systems. Through fieldwork and data analysis, our program aims to understand Earth's history, predict natural hazards, and address environmental challenges for a sustainable future.

Ecology
This experience includes providing research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students that generates new knowledge and formulates effective solutions for a sustainable Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

Ecosystem proccesses
Our Ecosystem Processes research program investigates the interactions and energy flows within ecosystems, examining nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and species interactions. Our research informs ecosystem management, conservation efforts, and enhances understanding of ecosystem responses to environmental changes.

Environment and Sustainability
Our Environment and Sustainability research program explores sustainable practices, environmental health, and resource management. We address climate impacts, ecosystem resilience, and human-environment interactions, aiming to develop solutions that promote long-term ecological balance and sustainable development for future generations.

Marine and Costal Sciences
Our Marine and Coastal Sciences research program examines oceanic and coastal ecosystems, focusing on biodiversity, habitat health, and human impacts. We address issues like climate change, pollution, and resource management to support sustainable practices and conservation of marine environments.
