Conditional Admission to Graduate Programs

We understand that each applicant's journey is unique, and sometimes, your application may not fully meet the standard requirements at the time of submission. If your GPA falls below our standard admission requirement of a 3.0 in the last 60 credit hours, or if you have pending documentation, conditional admission may be an option for you.

What is Conditional Admission?

Conditional admission is an opportunity for applicants who may not meet all the standard admission criteria but demonstrate potential or are awaiting the completion of specific requirements. This pathway allows you to start your graduate studies under certain conditions that must be met to continue in the program.

What Does Conditional Admission Mean for You?

If you are admitted conditionally, it means that while you are allowed to begin your graduate studies, you must fulfill specific requirements to transition to a clear admission status. These conditions may include:

  • Academic Performance: You might need to achieve a certain GPA during your first semester/term or complete specific foundational courses.
  • Pending Documentation: You may need to submit final transcripts, official test scores, or other required documents.

If admitted conditionally, the specific conditions will be outlined in your admission letter, which you will receive from gradadmissions@utrgv.edu.

How to Get Cleared from Conditional Admission

To move from conditional to full admission status, you must:

  1. Meet Academic Conditions: If applicable, achieve the GPA and course requirements outlined in your admission letter.
  2. Submit Pending Documentation: Provide any outstanding documents, such as final transcripts or test scores by the deadline listed in your admission letter.
  3. Stay Informed: Regularly check your UTRGV email account and communicate with your Graduate Program Coordinator or admissions office to ensure you are meeting all requirements.

Once all conditions are met, graduate admissions office will update your admissions status to clear and send you an email with this update.

Important Considerations

  • No Financial Aid: Please note that while you are conditionally admitted, you will not be eligible for financial aid. Financial aid eligibility will be re-evaluated once you achieve clear admission status.
  • Provisional Timeline: For academic conditions, you have one semester to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. For pending documentation, conditions can be cleared as soon as the required documents are submitted. Failure to meet the conditions within the specified timeline may result in dismissal from the program.

Take the Next Step

Conditional admission is your opportunity to start your graduate education, even if you don’t currently meet all the standard requirements. Whether you're working to improve your academic standing or waiting on final documents, we encourage you to apply and pursue your academic and professional goals.
