Welcome to UTRGV!
We understand that life gets busy, plans change, and the unexpected happens. If you need to adjust the start date of your graduate program, here’s how to move up or postpone your admission term:
Eligibility
Only students admitted to a graduate program that permits term changes are eligible to submit a request. If you have not received an admission offer, this option is not available.
Conditions
- One-Time: You can request a term change only once per admitted program.
- Program-Specific: Some programs may not permit a term change. Programs that do not permit term changes require a new application for every term of interest.
- Approval: A term change is not guaranteed. Approval must be obtained from both the Graduate Program Coordinator and Graduate Admissions.
Process
- Submit a Request: Complete the Graduate Admissions Term Change Request Form, below, to initiate the process.
- Review of Request: Your request will be reviewed by the Graduate Program Coordinator and Graduate Admissions. While most decisions will be made within 7 business days the turnaround time can vary from program to program.
- Notification:
- Approved: You will receive an email notification about the decision.
- Denied: You will receive an email notification about the decision and should plan to apply to the desired program and term.
Timeframe
You may request a term change for a semester prior to your admission term or any semester within one year from your original admission term. Review examples below:
- New Student One: Admitted for Fall 2025, request term change to Spring 2025.
- New Student Two: Admitted for Fall 2024, request term change to Spring 2025, Summer I 2025, Summer II 2025, or Fall 2025.
Requests for a term change beyond one year are not allowed and a new application for the future term is required.
Additional Information for International Students
International students who change their term of admission must contact International Student Services for guidance. Changing your original admission term can have an impact on your immigration status.
Reminder
If your deferral request is denied, or if you are unable to attend in the approved semester, you will need to submit a new application to the graduate program.
