Provost Announcement: Interim Dean for the College of Engineering and Computer Science

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley | Office of the Provost & Academic Affairs

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Robert Freeman as the Interim Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at UTRGV. Dr. Freeman is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, who joined a UTRGV legacy institution in 1994 as one of the first members of the engineering faculty. He has served UTRGV in a variety of roles, including as Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2009.

Dr. Freeman received his PhD, MEng, and BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida and has been recognized for his contributions to engineering education and research, having authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and conference proceedings.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Freeman has demonstrated a strong commitment to student success and academic excellence. As a 2009 winner of an inaugural UT System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award, he has been instrumental in developing innovative educational programs and securing significant grant support for STEM education initiatives. His leadership and dedication to the field of engineering make him an excellent choice for this interim role.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Freeman to this new position and supporting him as he leads the College of Engineering during this transitional period.

I would again like to thank Dr. Ala Qubbaj for his leadership of the College of Engineering and Computer Science since 2019, assembling an excellent faculty and enrolling top students in our engineering and computer science programs.  We wish him well in his transition back the faculty.

Sincerely,

Luis H. Zayas, Ph.D.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
