Master of Science in Human Resource Management

The Human Resource Management (MS) focuses on the practical workings of human resources. The goal of the program is to prepare the human resource leaders in an increasingly diverse and international workplace. Students will learn to develop a strategic staffing vision, shape corporate culture, and empower organizational change. The program is a 30-hour accelerated online program. Graduates of the program will have the skills to contribute to the missions of global companies, especially those that conduct business in Mexico and Latin America, a significant sector of the Rio Grande Valley local business environment.

Courses

An analysis of organizational behavior theories and their application to organizational settings and the workplace with the goal of improving individual, group, and organizational performance. Students will examine the role of motivation, work attitudes, perception, decision-making, diversity, leadership, communication, power, teamwork, personality, culture, ethics, values, and other aspects of organizational life that drive human behavior in organizational settings.
An analysis of the functions of personnel administration and of the relationship between the personnel-industrial relations system and the total organization system. Contemporary industrial relations, philosophies, and practices.
This course focuses on the identification, recruitment, selection, and promotion of successful employees. The development of systems that comply with regulatory issues such as equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws while satisfying business goals will be covered. Measurement issues will be discussed in the context of their relevance to not only legal issues but also the validity of the measures. The pros and cons of various recruitment approaches and selection techniques will also be discussed. Case studies illustrating legal issues in selection will be evaluated. The use of emerging technologies in selection and assessment will be covered.
This course focuses on the linkage between human resources and the organization's financial plan. The processes of analyzing, benchmarking, controlling, and measuring the effectiveness of human resource programs will be discussed. The application of research design and measurement theory to develop meaningful HRM metrics will be emphasized. The students will learn how to report findings in a practical and influential manner. They will also learn how to use statistical software to analyze their data and draw meaningful conclusions.
This course focuses on the legal and regulatory factors surrounding human resource management. The emphasis will be on creating awareness of legal risks and legal constraints when making HR business decisions. Case studies will be used to illustrate and discuss legal implications.
This course focuses on the global aspects of human resource management, including a comparative analysis of labor standards and ethics, the selection, training, and management of expatriates and other international assignees, and global talent management.
This course covers all aspects of compensation and reward systems such as the strategic alignment of compensation and other human resources systems, job evaluation, merit- and skill-based pay, cost-effective benefit programs, and the increasingly flexible compensation systems demanded by today's dynamic and diverse workforce.
This course focuses on the development and implementation of effective performance management systems. Design issues such as criterion contamination and rating formats will be covered so the students learn how to design valid performance measurement systems. The development of multi-source and electronic performance monitoring will be covered. The process of diagnosing performance problems will be discussed. Implementation issues such as facilitating effective performance feedback interviews, coaching employees, handling poor performance and troubled employees, and documenting performance problems will be reviewed. A systems thinking model of succession planning and leadership development in today's volatile workplace will be discussed.
This course is designed to provide a broad overview of leadership and change with the ultimate goal of each student developing a well thought out and understood personal leadership philosophy that includes an enlightened approach of managing and leading change. The course will expose you to numerous perspectives on leadership and change by some of the greatest minds that have studied the topic. Through the design of this course your critical thinking skills and the ability to communicate and effectively will be enhanced. The course will utilize technology and relevant platforms to enhance students? learning to prepare them for both current and future workplace demands.
This capstone course integrates the skills and knowledge needed in the job of the general manager, with the central theme of competitive advantage analysis. The main topics covered in this course include formulating strategy, managing strategic change, implementing strategy and developing general manager. The objectives of this course will be achieved by simulation decision-making, case discussion, and other learning tools.
