English Minors

The Department of Writing & Language Studies offers three different minors in our English program.  These minors allow students to develop a variety of useful skills and gain knowledge about the way English works in the world and in professional settings.

Minor in English

  • The English minor requires 18 advanced hours.
  • You select six (6) courses at the 3000-level or 4000-level.
  • In consultation with an academic advisor, faculty mentor, or professor, you could consider which combination of English classes will help you to develop skills that will broaden your professional options for the future. An English minor strengthens a resume.
  • The six classes you select for your Minor in English can be chosen to fit your available schedule and to help you develop knowledge and abilities to accompany your major.
  • An English minor enables you to enhance skills in reading, writing, language, and analysis that will be versatile and useful across many professions.
  • Many upper-level English classes are available in Brownsville, in Edinburg, by ITV, and in online formats

Minor in English as a Second Language Instruction

The English as a Second Language Instruction for grades 7-12 is available to any student from any field who would like to pursue ESL as a teaching field and fulfills ESL supplemental standards for the Texas Education Agency.  For purpose of meeting TEA standards for ESL teaching in secondary schools in Texas, these courses or their equivalent at the graduate level may be taken either all at one lever or mixed at either level.
