Tuition Set Aside Notification

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is required by law (Texas Education Code, Section 56.011, 56.012, and 56.465) to set aside a percentage of designated tuition that students pay each semester for financial assistance programs. Tuition set asides are required of all Texas residents at Texas public institutions of higher education.

To comply with Senate Bill 1304, passed by the 81st Texas Legislature, the university is required to report to each student the amount of tuition paid by the student that must be set aside to provide financial assistance to qualified students.

The set aside does not affect your financial aid awards, if received, nor does it guarantee that you will receive financial aid assistance. Financial assistance eligibility is determined by the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

What is tuition set aside?

Tuition set aside is a portion of the designated tuition paid by resident student "set aside" and dedicated to providing need-based financial aid to students. Resident student means those classified as citizens of the State of Texas.

Do I owe anything?

No, student does not owe or will not see these funds. The monies pay into a fund for financial aid to help support need-based financial aid programs for qualifying students.

When will I receive the money?

The set aside does not affect financial aid awards, if received, nor does it guarantee that you will receive financial aid assistance. To be eligible for assistance, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Eligibility for financial aid is determine by information provided on the form.

Why are these funds being set aside?

The university is required by state law to set aside a portion of designated tuition charged to a resident student. Texas Education code sections 56.011 and 56.012

How much is designated tuition?

Designated tuition rate is subject to change. Students can view current tuition rates under Tuition and Fees.

What if I don't want my money to be used this way?

Unfortunately, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley does not have the ability to change the requirements of the state law. You may direct further questions and concerns to the Texas Legislature.
