Student Union Advisory Board

Purpose

The purpose of the Student Union Advisory Board (SUAB), which shall report to the President of the University through the Dean of Students and the Vice President of Student Affairs, shall be to exercise control of the Student Union fees as prescribed by statute, to recommend Student Union general and specific policies, to departments. It shall also be responsible for seeing that the financial operations are consistent with stated purposes of the Student Union. The Student Union Advisory Board shall formulate its own Bylaws, within University rules and regulations, subject to approval by the President of the University.

Responsibilities

  • Annually submit to the President of the University of Texas-Pan American a complete and itemized budget with a complete report of all activities conducted during the past year and all expenditures made in connection with those activities.
  • The President shall submit the budget to the Board of Regents as part of the institutional budget
  • Reflect the diverse perspectives of the members of their constituent organizations and the student body/University community
  • Support Student Union programs and provide constructive evaluations and feedback through appropriate channel
  • Attend SUAB meeting and actively participate in discussions
  • Create standing and ad hoc committees as needed
  • Serve on any standing and/or ad hoc committees as assigned by the chair of the SUAB
  • Provide updates for their constituents at least once each fall, spring and summer (student members only)
  • Provide an update to their constituency and the Staff Senate, upon request (faculty members and the Assistant Director of the Student Union/Coordinator for Student Activities, respectively) Conduct non-binding polls of the student body with respect to specific types of issues, including programming preferences, as deemed necessary.   • Two students-at-large (voting), selected by SUAB, based on submitted applications and interviews
  • One student representative from the Student Government Association (voting), appointed by the SGA President with approval of the Student Senate
  • One student representative from the Campus Programming Board (voting), elected by the CBP Executive Board with formal appointment by the SGA President and the Student Senate
  • One student representative from Residential Life (voting), selected by the Residential Life Advisory Committee, based on submitted applications and interviews
  • One student representative from campus student organizations (voting), selected by the Committee on Student Organizations, based on submitted applications and interviews
  • Two faculty members (voting), appointed by the Faculty Senate
  • One staff representative from the Office of Student Involvement (voting), designate by the Senior Associate Dean of Students
  • Assistant Director of the Student Union/Director of Student Activities (ex-officio, non-voting)
  • Student Union Director (ex-officio, non-voting)

Student Members

Student members shall have to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.25 throughout their terms on the Student Union Advisory Board.
Undergraduate student members shall be enrolled for at least twelve hours and Graduate students must be enrolled for at least six hours during each fall and spring semester.
Student members must be in good standing in academics and student conduct with the University.

Student members shall serve two-year staggered terms. Faculty shall serve three-year staggered terms. Terms begin October 1 and end on September 30 of the respective years.
Student representatives of the Student Government Association, Campus Programming Board, Residential Life and student organizations will serve their designated terms as long as they remain members of their original constituencies.
