South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute

The South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute was established on October 13, 2014 to be a focus of world-class biomedical research programs at the new University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Institute has diverse research efforts in the areas of diabetes and obesity, including studies of related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disease, infectious disease, and ocular health. STDOI investigators are working to address the critical public health problems of the South Texas region. The objectives of the Institute are listed below.

  1. To build a global Center for research on the genetic and environmental factors influencing diabetes, obesity, and related disorders.
  2. To conduct innovative research on diabetes, obesity, and other diseases of public health significance in South Texas.
  3. To make discoveries that ultimately will lead to new cures and treatments for diabetes, obesity, and related disorders.
  4. To build state-of-the-art resources and capabilities that will support research on diabetes, obesity, and related disorders at UTRGV by STDOI investigators and their collaborators.
