Grand Opening

In alignment with their community service goals, the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation generously awarded The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley College of Liberal Arts a $6 million grant for the development of the Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology.
The specific outcomes of this grant include:
- Creation of two mental health training clinics, to provide students with developing advanced clinical training and knowledge in the Psychology field.
- Graduate assistantships for students in the Ph.D. program, which will enable them to integrate their instructional program with clinical practice and research.
- Relationships between UTRGV and mental health providers in the community, which will increase access to mental health services for all Valley citizens.
- Talented professionals in the field who are more likely to remain in the Valley and serve the area.
- Research that will discover and innovate new methods for treating mental health issues among Hispanics, which can then be disseminated to underserved populations in the Valley and across the country.
Edinburg Facility
The Clinical Psychology Training Clinic is approximately 8,024 square feet and houses both the psychology training clinic and Ph.D. program research laboratories. The training clinic consists of 12 treatment rooms equipped with technology for live supervision, two testing rooms, and six research labs. In addition, the clinic will use state-of-the-art virtual reality computer software for conducting the latest evidence-based exposure therapy and other behavioral therapy intervention treatments. The Psychology training clinic provides services to the community and helps people having some problems and issues such as anxiety, depression, relational problems, family problems, academic problems, parenting difficulties, divorce and separation adjustment, trauma, childhood abuse, bereavement, behavioral issues, and life transitions.
The clinic provides the following psychotherapy services:
- Adult Individual Therapy
- Child and Adolescent Therapy
- Parent Counseling
- Group Therapy
- Couple Therapy
In addition, the facility research laboratories are actively investigating in the following areas:
- Child and Adolescent Trauma
- Intimate Partner Violence
- Mental Health of Immigrants and Refugees
- Mental Health Service Efficacy and Access
- Stress, Sleep, & Health
- Health Psychology
- Neurodevelopmental Disorders
