UTRGV student earns spot on new reality music competition "Operación Triunfo USA"

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – JULY 6, 2026 – Living with fellow musicians, practicing around the clock and performing weekly on national television is now a reality for UTRGV student José Ángel Fernández. The McAllen native recently earned a coveted spot on the new music reality show, Operación Triunfo USA (Operation Triumph USA).

“The opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming one of the great artists in the music industry inspired me to audition,” said Fernández, a psychology major with a minor in music technology. “Having the chance to gain exposure, grow as an artist and connect with people through my music made this an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

The premise of the show gathers young performers from across the United States to live together in a boarding-school environment called “The Academy.” There, they receive intensive coaching from industry professionals in various artistic disciplines.

Each week, contestants will compete in solo and group concerts. A combination of judges, teachers and audience members will decide who stays and who goes home, with the ultimate winner securing a life-changing music career.

For Fernández, music has always been a vehicle for self-discovery and connection.

“Being able to create something deeply personal that can also resonate with so many others is one of the most incredible feelings I have ever experienced,” he said.

He credits his time at UTRGV for equipping him with the tools necessary to navigate this high-stakes competition.

“Through my music technology minor, I’ve developed skills in music production, recording and the creative process that have helped shape me as both a musician and a producer,” he said. “Studying psychology has given me a deeper understanding of people, emotions and communication, which I believe also influences my songwriting and artistry.”

Fernández also expressed gratitude for Dr. Jason Mitchell, a lecturer in the UTRGV School of Music, “who believed in my music project from day one and has been a constant source of encouragement.”

As he steps onto the national stage, Fernández hopes his journey inspires other aspiring musicians to take daily action toward their goals.

“The journey will require sacrifices, discipline and patience,” he said. “But if you stay committed, everything you invest along the way will be worth it.”
