IDEA Public Schools and UTRGV launch innovative autism early intervention program to serve Rio Grande Valley families

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – JULY 23, 2026 – For local families navigating long waitlists for specialized autism services, a new collaborative program is set to offer a vital lifeline right inside the classroom.

IDEA Public Schools, in partnership with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, announced the launch of Classroom IDEAL (Individuals Dedicated to Excellence, Achievement and Learning for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder). This innovative early autism intervention program will debut at IDEA Quest Academy for the 2026–2027 school year.

The initiative is backed by a grant of more than $1 million from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) spanning two years. Dr. Noe Ramos, associate professor of Human Development and School Services in the UTRGV College of Education and P-16 Integration, will lead the project as principal investigator. Under his leadership, UTRGV will conduct vital research on this high-frequency service delivery model, studying its impact on accelerating learning, increasing desired classroom behaviors and improving long-term developmental trajectories for the participating students.

"Research consistently demonstrates that young children on the autism spectrum make the greatest gains when provided with intensive early interventions," Ramos said. "Building on our strong history of collaborating with IDEA Public Schools on federal mental health initiatives, we knew their student-centered special education leadership team was the perfect partner to implement these critical services for Valley families, especially in a region where these intensive resources have historically been scarce."

Jill Dominguez, area superintendent of IDEA Rio Grande Valley, emphasized how this partnership bridges the gap between clinical science and daily schooling.

"Early intervention can have a profound impact on a child's development and future success," Dominguez said. "Through our partnership with UTRGV, Classroom IDEAL will provide students with autism access to specialized services in a supportive educational environment where they can thrive academically, socially and emotionally." 

While Classroom IDEAL is a grant-funded initiative focused on early autism intervention, IDEA Quest Academy serves students in general education and special education programs from kindergarten through 12th grade. The campus offers a comprehensive educational experience designed to meet the diverse needs of all learners, with Classroom IDEAL serving as one of several specialized supports available to families.

Classroom IDEAL will serve 45 early childhood students (ages 5–7) with a diagnosis of autism each year, reaching a total of 90 students over the two-year grant period. The project sets rigorous benchmarks for success, aiming for at least 75% of participating students to achieve measurable improvements across key developmental areas, including communication, social functioning, adaptive behaviors, self-help and fine motor skills. 

The free initiative features three specialized classrooms, each limited to 15 students to ensure a low student-to-staff ratio, staffed by a certified special education teacher and two paraprofessionals to deliver intensive, individualized intervention. To provide this integrated model, instructional staff will collaborate closely with an embedded multidisciplinary team of specialists, including: 

• Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs)
• Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs)
• Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)
• Occupational Therapists (OTs)

To ensure clinical precision, UTRGV is appointing a program director to monitor the fidelity of the therapeutic treatments and oversee data-driven student goals. The grant will also fund a UTRGV graduate research assistant to collect specialized data across all vantage points, including teachers, therapists and families, to track the program's efficacy.

These professionals will seamlessly weave evidence-based therapeutic strategies into daily classroom instruction. By aligning therapy and education throughout the school day, Classroom IDEAL creates consistent opportunities for students to strengthen communication and social skills, promote positive behavior outcomes, build independence and achieve long-term academic success.

Beyond the classroom, UTRGV faculty will lead specialized training sessions for parents, equipping families with the exact evidence-based strategies used during the school day. This coordinated intervention approach ensures that skill development is seamlessly reinforced at home, promoting the generalization of new skills across school, home and community settings.

A REGIONAL BLUEPRINT

The model classrooms at IDEA Quest Academy will also serve as a blueprint for training educators across South Texas through a complementary grant initiative, Teacher FACTT (Functional Communication Training for Teachers). Also led by Ramos, this project is grounded in the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and will provide professional development to 200 teachers and paraprofessionals across 11 school districts over the next two years. Participants will gain evidence-based strategies to implement, replicate and scale these therapeutic supports within their own schools and communities, expanding access to effective functional communication interventions for students with autism and related disabilities throughout the region.

ENROLLMENT AND ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

Enrollment is available for up to 45 eligible students, ages 5–7, with a diagnosis of autism per school year. Placement opportunities will be offered as applications are received and eligibility is confirmed. To support families in learning more about these grant-funded classrooms, participation in a mandatory parent information session is required prior to admission; submission of an application does not guarantee placement.

An informational session for interested families will be held at IDEA Quest Academy (14001 N Rooth Rd., Edinburg, TX 78541) on Monday, July 27, in the library at 5:30 p.m. During the session, families will learn about the Classroom IDEAL program, eligibility requirements, the application process and the specialized supports available through this grant-funded initiative.
