Meet Alyssa Marie Silva: Committed to helping future generations
Where it All Began: Mission, Texas
Scholarly Journey: Masters of Business Administration (December 2020) & Bachelors of Business Administration – Accountancy (December 2018)
Career Calling: Finance Accountant
Where I Make an Impact: Sharyland Independent School District in Mission, Texas
What is your current role?
As an accountant at Sharyland ISD, I manage the district budget to ensure compliance with all TEA policies. Working in the education sector carries a special sense of purpose, as the work I do directly impacts students’ learning experiences and, ultimately, their futures.
How do you find it rewarding?
The most rewarding part is seeing our students graduate, pursue the colleges of their dreams, and hopefully return to give back as educators, mentors, or community leaders. Being a product of the Mission community myself, it is especially meaningful to serve the very district that shaped me and to contribute to the success of future generations.
What motivated you to choose UTRGV for your studies?
The Rio Grande Valley has always been home, and I wanted to remain close to my roots while being part of the first graduating class of the newly renamed university, UTRGV. Growing up with parents who worked in a local school district, I was surrounded by leaders who earned their degrees from UT-Pan American. I remember thinking, ‘They are so successful, and they studied right here at home—I can do the same.’ That thought has stayed with me throughout my journey at UTRGV.
How did your experience at the university shape your career path?
My experience at UTRGV played a major role in shaping my career path. The education I received, along with the opportunities to engage in organizations like Enactus, allowed me to build leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that I now apply in my professional role. Being part of a growing university also inspired me to embrace change, strive for excellence, and give back to my community—values that continue to guide my career in the education sector.
What are some of your fondest memories from your time at UTRGV?
One of the most memorable parts of my time at UTRGV was being a part of the Robert C. Vackar College of Business. I joined an organization called Enactus, where I made lasting memories collaborating with local businesses and organizations to give back to our community
How do you feel the university has evolved over the past 10 years?
I still remember my first day at UTRGV, feeling small as I walked into such a big school on its opening day. Looking back now, I feel incredibly proud to be a graduate of a university that has grown into one of the top institutions in our region. From establishing a School of Medicine to launching a Division I football team, UTRGV has made tremendous strides in every aspect of education, and I am honored to be part of its legacy.
What advice would you give to current university students based on your experiences?
My advice to all students is this: attend that club meeting, go to that game, support your university, and keep pushing yourself—you are worth more than you realize. Don’t give up, because opportunities will come your way, one degree at a time.
What are your hopes for the future of UTRGV as it moves into its next decade?
My hope is for UTRGV to continue rising as one of the top UT schools in Texas and to expand its academic programs to offer students even more diverse career opportunities.
