RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – May 15, 2025 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will host its first standalone graduation ceremony for the Math and Science Academy (MSA) Class of 2025.

Since its founding in 2009, MSA students have traditionally graduated alongside UTRGV's Spring Commencement ceremonies. This year marks a milestone, as the Class of 2025 will be honored with a dedicated ceremony celebrating their academic achievements with family, friends, and loved ones.

The ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, at the Harlingen CISD Performing Arts Center, located at 3217 West Wilson Road in Harlingen. Doors will open at 3 p.m. for guest seating.

More than 100 MSA graduates from the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses are expected to participate.

Speakers will include Alias Ortega, MSA Director, and Dr. Jonnika Charlton, UTRGV Senior Vice Provost for Student Success and Academic Affairs.

For the first time, the event also will feature remarks from the MSA valedictorian, Maxim Ermolinsky, and salutatorian, Angelique De Anda Trevino.

ABOUT UTRGV

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine and a School of Podiatry, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, Weslaco, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015; the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016, and the School of Podiatric Medicine in the fall of 2022.
