RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – MAY 21, 2025 – For nearly two decades, UTRGV’s Dr. Dumitru Caruntu, professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of the university’s Biomechanics Laboratory, has dedicated his career to advancing mechanical engineering research and fostering innovation and mentorship within the global engineering community.
Recently, his extensive voluntary service and leadership were recognized at the highest level when he received the prestigious Dedicated Service Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
The award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional voluntary service at the society level, significantly advancing ASME’s mission through leadership, mentoring, committee work, and efforts promoting excellence and innovation in engineering.
“Receiving the ASME Dedicated Service Award is both a personal honor and a professional milestone,” Caruntu said. “It validates my dedication to research, education and service, reinforcing my belief in collaboration and leadership in shaping the future of engineering.”
EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERING
Caruntu’s contributions have significantly shaped the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE), ASME’s premier global event, which annually attracts engineers, researchers, industry experts and academics worldwide.
As general congress chair of IMECE 2023, Caruntu successfully guided one of the most influential mechanical engineering conferences globally, ensuring a robust technical program and promoting international collaboration. He served as vice chair of the IMECE Congress Steering Committee (2023–24), further guiding the strategic growth of the event.
“One of my most impactful contributions to IMECE has been fostering interdisciplinary collaboration,” Caruntu said. “Encouraging early-career researchers to participate and connect with seasoned professionals is especially rewarding. Empowering the next generation is one of the most lasting legacies we can leave.”
DRIVING POSITIVE CHANGE
Caruntu’s commitment to ASME extends beyond IMECE. He serves as chair for 2023 to 2025, and previously served as chair from 2011 to 2013 of the ASME Technical Committee on Dynamics & Control of Systems & Structures (AMD).
His scholarly articles and contributions include serving as associate editor (2015–21) for the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement & Control, and track chair (2014–21) for IMECE’s Dynamics, Vibration, and Control track.
Additionally, Caruntu chaired workshops and tutorials at the ASME’s Dynamic Systems and Control Division (DSCD, 2015), and has continuously organized symposia and sessions at IMECE since 2005.
Reflecting on his extensive service, Caruntu highlighted what drives his long-term dedication.
“What motivates me most is the chance to contribute to efforts that foster innovation, connect professionals and empower the next generation to lead with purpose,” he said. “Engineering is more than a technical pursuit – it’s a powerful avenue for driving positive change.”

ABOUT UTRGV
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine and a School of Podiatry, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, Weslaco, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015; the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016, and the School of Podiatric Medicine in the fall of 2022.
