By Maria Gonzalez

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – MAY 3, 2024 – The UTRGV Graduate College will hold its Spring 2024 doctoral hooding ceremony May 8 at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex on the Edinburg Campus.

The ceremony, which starts at 6:30 p.m., recognizes the accomplishments of doctoral graduates. It will include the individual announcement of each candidate, display of their dissertation title, and a ceremonial hooding by their dissertation chair, co-chair, or a committee member.

Dr. Can (John) Saygin, senior vice president for Research and dean of the Graduate College, said the Graduate College hooding ceremony is a new tradition and a key component of the university’s commitment to celebrating student success.

“This event is more than just a ceremony,” he said. “It reflects the scholarly achievements of our students and their readiness to address critical societal challenges. They will have a significant impact on the future of the Rio Grande Valley and beyond, especially as we strive to become a regional research university.”

This is the second doctoral hooding ceremony at UTRGV, a signature event in a student’s academic and professional journeys.

ABOUT UTRGV

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
