RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – AUG. 28, 2023 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will hold its annual Day of Giving on Wednesday, August 30.

Donations that come in during the one-day event give students access to life-changing programs, scholarships and research initiatives, and help provide a solid foundation for their future.

With generous support from the Valley community, last year’s UTRGV Day of Giving raised more than $200,000, and every dollar donated had a substantial impact on programs and services that help UTRGV offer an affordable, accessible higher education for all students.

Dr. Kelly Nassour, UTRGV executive vice president for Institutional Advancement, said a gift to UTRGV is an investment in students and the future of the Rio Grande Valley.

“Donations from our community during Day of Giving make a difference by providing students with an improved educational experience,” Nassour said. “By supporting our students, you contribute to their future success, which is an immeasurable gift.”

Nassour also said that when UTRGV students succeed, the entire region succeeds.

“The money raised during Day of Giving impacts students directly – students who are the future generation of leaders that will improve our communities and, quite possibly, the world,” she said.

“UTRGV’s Day of Giving aims to raise awareness about the power of collective action and giving back,” Nassour said. “Philanthropic support for UTRGV makes a noticeable difference in our work to advance higher education in South Texas.”

She said participants can help amplify the power of their own donations by telling friends and family about Day of Giving, and by sharing the event online with the hashtag #OneUTRGV.

UTRGV Day of Giving begins at midnight and concludes at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Participants can direct their gift to any area of the university they wish to support, such as the Student Food Pantry, Athletics, academic colleges, or scholarships.

Progress is tracked in real time, allowing participants to see the impact of their donation.

ABOUT UTRGV

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
