About 87 students from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley gathered to demonstrate school pride and receive their official UTRGV rings at the annual Ring Ceremony held Tuesday, April 10 at the UTRGV Performing Arts Center in Edinburg.
The UTRGV ring, which was designed by UTRGV students last year, signifies Vaquero pride for students receiving bachelors, masters, doctorates or doctorates in medicine. Alondra Galvan, UTRGV SGA president; Dr. Patricia McHatton, UTRGV executive vice president for Academic Affairs, Student Success and P-16 Integration; and Natasha Del Barrio, Bert Ogden Auto Group CEO, offered encouraging words to students during the ceremony.
As per tradition, students receiving their rings were also invited to sign the register for the ceremony and ink their fingers orange to show their “V” pride.
The rings are available for purchase at jostens.com for alumni and students who have earned at least 75 credit hours.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
