Spoofed Phone Calls Requesting Personal Information

Information Security Office

UTRGV faculty and staff

We want to make everyone aware of a recent report in which a staff member received a phone call to their personal number from a number displaying as a UTRGV line. The caller requested personal insurance information, and the staff member correctly identified the call as a scam.  The call most likely came from a spoofed number.

What You Need to Know

  • Scammers may disguise their caller ID to appear as an official UTRGV phone number.
  • They often request sensitive information such as insurance details, financial information, or account credentials.
  • These attempts are not legitimate and should be treated as potential security threats.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Do not share personal, financial, or sensitive information over the phone unless you initiated the call to a verified number.
  • If a call seems suspicious, hang up immediately.
  • Report any questionable calls to the Information Security Office and UTRGV Police Department.
  • When in doubt, verify directly with the department the caller claims to represent.

If You Receive a Suspicious Call

  • Document the phone number and the nature of the request.
  • Report it to the UTRGV Police Department at 956‑882‑7777 or the ISO at IS@utrgv.edu.
  • Avoid returning calls to unknown or suspicious numbers.

Maintaining awareness and exercising caution will help protect both personal and institutional information. Thank you for your continued vigilance in safeguarding our campus community.
