Leadership Opportunities
The Department of Housing and Residence Life depends on UTRGV students to assist with many of the programs and services that we offer. Joining the student team is an opportunity to serve the UTRGV on campus community and learn transferable workplace skills.
Join the Team – Resident Assistant Program
Resident Assistants (RAs) are students that live and work in all residence hall communities. They provide guidance to residents living in their community and exemplify UTRGV culture. They are leaders in their residential communities as well as in the UTRGV community.
The RA selection process takes place every Spring Semester for the following academic year.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be in good academic and disciplinary standing within UT System
- Pass Criminal Background Check
* Additional academic and behavioral requirements will be shared at the information sessions as well as on the application form.
Benefits of Serving as a Resident Assistant:
Leadership Development: RAs will gain valuable transferable skills during their tenure by connecting with departments, leaders, and community members as ambassadors for UTRGV and serving as peer mentors for their assigned residents.
- Room: RAs receive a room at no charge as remuneration.
- Board: RAs will receive a Dining Plan at no charge.
* The Financial Aid Office must consider waivers when determining financial aid eligibility which may result in a student’s financial aid package being affected. Please meet with a financial aid coordinator to discuss your individual circumstances.
Timeline:
Candidates will receive emails to their UTRGV email throughout the process updating them on the status of their candidacy. Email is the primary method of communication during this process.

Selected candidates will be asked to attend an interview. The interview format (group, individual, online, in person, etc.) is to be determined by the Housing & Residence Life staff. |
Candidates that are selected will need to attend RA Training/ Move-in starting mid-August. First time Resident Assistants are encouraged to prioritize RA training during this time.
Employment Opportunities
Desk Attendant – Residence Halls, Edinburg
The Desk Attendant position is a Work Study position in the Residence Halls that provides administrative assistance to the Housing and Residence Life staff. Scheduling for this position takes place Monday – Sunday, and allows up to 15 hours a week.
Student Assistant – Main Office, Brownsville & Edinburg
The Student Assistant position is a Work Study position in the Residence Life Office (UC 305, Edinburg and Casa Bella, Brownsville) that provides administrative assistance to the Housing and Residence Life staff. Scheduling for this position takes place Monday – Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM and allows 15 - 19 hours a week.
Student Marketing Coordinator – Student Experience Internship (SEI), Brownsville & Edinburg
The Student Marketing Coordinator – SEI position is an internship in collaboration with the Career Center’s SEI program*. The students gain real-life marketing experience and provide additional assistance to the Housing and Residence Life staff. Scheduling for this position takes place Monday – Friday and allows up to 19 hours a week.
