Veronica Cano has worked as the Faculty Ombuds at UTRGV since the position was created in August of 2019. Ms. Cano earned her MSW from University of Houston and her bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University. Ms. Cano has worked as a psychotherapist in private practice, community health, and higher education settings. Additionally, Ms. Cano previously worked as a clinical therapist for students at UTPA as well as an adjunct professor in the Social Work department.  Ms. Cano is a native of West Texas and has lived in the Rio Grande Valley for the past 20 years. She is an active member of the International Ombudsman Association.

Carla currently serves as an Employee Engagement & Wellness Coordinator with the Office of Human Resources at UT Rio Grande Valley. She joined the legacy institution in 2013, but her HR career started in 2005 in Hospitality Industry in Monterrey, Mexico.

Carla is passionate about employee engagement and providing the best information, resources, and services to employees, and fulfills her commitment by establishing connections across campus, the UT System, and the community. She is a Certified Worksite Wellness Specialist (CWWS) by the National Wellness Institute and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration at UTRGV.

When not at work, you can find Carla enjoying time with her two beautiful children, running, working out or practicing yoga.

Fred Zaidan Is currently the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Success and a Professor of Biology.  He also has a side hustle as Interim Chemistry Chair, which is ending next week.  Before joining the Dean’s Office as an Associate Dean in June 2018, he served as Biology Chair for 5.5 years.

Fred was born and raised in rural Western Pennsylvania.  He spent his early years chasing critters in the wood and fields surrounding his home.  Much of this was in preparation for his career as a herpetologist (which he declared the summer before first grade). 

Fred received his Bachelors in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University, his Masters in Biology from the University of Mississippi, and his PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Arkansas.  He received postdoctoral training at the University of Florida before joining a legacy institution in Fall 2003. As a physiological ecologist, he seeks to understand how the environment affects the inner working of the organism (mostly snakes in his case) and how this feeds back into where they can live and when they can be active.
