Cristina brings extensive experience to the education and community development efforts of South Texas. She has over two decades of experience working with nonprofit organizations, municipalities, the private sector and higher education. Ms. Trejo has specialized in community based strategic planning, asset mapping, organizational assessment, professional development and community engagement.
She currently serves as the Director of a National Science Foundation program focused on transforming undergraduate STEM education and was formerly the Associate Vice President for Community Engagement and Economic Development at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In her higher education senior executive roles, she has coordinated and facilitated the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs and community outreach initiatives; secured and administered federal, state and local grants; provided technical assistance in community-based strategic planning, professional development, interagency collaboration; and facilitated institutional partnerships.
Cristina has a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Houston, a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Sociology, from The University of Texas at El Paso, and is currently working toward a PhD in Education and Leadership at Pacific University, Oregon.
