JSTEM Through The Years

JSTEM is an innovative summer research program offered by the Office of Engaged Scholarship and Learning at UTRGV. This program is an opportunity for secondary students to learn communication and STEM in an authentically situated research setting at UTRGV. The program began in 2016 and has served more than 200 students in the Rio Grande Valley. To date, there are 236 JSTEM alumni:

  • 22.2% attended for 2 summers

  • 6.5% attended for 3 summers

  • 59% have enrolled at UTRGV. Average GPA of 2.96

  • 18% are pursuing a STEM major at UTRGV

This year, 17 students from Harlingen CISD, La Joya ISD, South Texas ISD, Edinburg CISD and Donna ISD conducted original research on several topics including:

  • The Environmental Effects of Volatile Organic Compounds Released by SpaceX Launches in South Texas

  • The Effects of Different Water Sources in the Rio Grande Valley on Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

  • Alteration and Design of an Eco-friendly Sparkler Prototype

  • Investigating the Effects of Water-Dwelling Microorganisms on Yeast Cells

  • The Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation on the Proliferation and Viability of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Cells
