Exhibit Work

Neocortex is a graphic novel that, on a surface level, delves into escapism through the use of a fantasy world. It is not an educational piece of media as much as it is a work of fiction. Each of the characters portrayed in the series uses a form of media, dissociation, depersonalization, or simple daydreams to get through their day to day. Without them realizing, their collective intentions led them to a world where their alternative selves can construct a safe space. The space is ever growing and will continue to expand so long as there are minds with similar intentions. Not all of it as it seems, after all, this world was manifested by humans, so it is only doomed to have humanities flaws. There is a harsh reality that awaits each and every one of the individuals who choose to exist there. It hides in plain sight as a collective out of mind. I decided to create a graphic novel for my exhibit based on my influences in storytelling. I have always been intuited by characters and world building. The ways in which a person can create these only using the tools in front of them will never cease to amaze me. I like to approach my work in a way that implies movement despite it being a still image. It is important for me that the world feels tangible. How the spaces and characters can feel real despite their worlds being fictional. People can become enamored with a series, character, or company due to the relatability in the stories they portray. I have seen how animation and general story telling can touch the hearts of many and how important it is to illustrate subjects with a level of respect that does not shun valid experiences. It has been quite the experience to apply my knowledge in graphic design with illustration in order to promote my hypothetical publisher and graphic novel.
