Artist Statement

personal logoOne of the earliest memories I have of viewing art with intention has to be when I was about five years old. My brother and I were watching cartoons while drawing on a blank piece of paper. As I stared at the television then back at my brother’s sketches, I realized that at some point the cartoon I was watching was drawn out by hand so that it was possible for me to be experience it in that moment. The lines he was making while drawing resembled the ones on the characters. If someone out there was able to make a drawing move, then it was possible for me to do the same with just the pencil and paper in my hand. I could create stories and worlds that were only stuck in my head. That was the day I began a strong bond with art and since then its only evolved and grown into the world of animation and storytelling. Media, whether you realize it or not, influences the general public in many ways. They can move you to purchase the latest in fashion or donate to well-meaning cause. This is often seen in animation, while common in educational content, this has been prevalent in all cervices of animation. Characters interact with one another with varying perspectives and challenges they must face in order to change their environment and themselves along the way. My artwork has been heavily influenced by this medium. I like to approach my work in a way that implies movement despite it being a still image. It is important for me that the world feels tangible. How the spaces and characters can feel real despite their worlds being fictional. People can become enamored with a series, character, or company due to the relatability in the stories they portray. I have seen how animation and general story telling can touch the hearts of many and how important it is to illustrate subjects with a level of respect that does not shun valid experiences. Art is not only about my personal perspective, the world around me has stories to tell, and I will always have an open mind in hopes of portraying them.
