Artist Statement
From a very young age, I always had an interest in any art related medium. Over the years, this interest evolved into a focus in traditional art making. I spent a lot of my time drawing and utilizing it as a comforting form of self-expression, until one day, I stopped completely. I started finding less and less time and enjoyment in creating art. I pushed myself away from it for years. It wasn’t until I decided to pursue graphic design in college that I revisited this once beloved interest. I started working on my traditional art skills once again and gained a new interest in communication design and expression. I feel that it was a bit of a risky move on my part – to go into college with zero graphic design experience – but it is a decision I do not regret. Through my classes, I learned the various programs in the Adobe Creative Suite started creating work I never would have been able to before.
I hope that through my work, I can inspire others. I constantly strive for self-improvement and personal growth, so as someone who came from a very limited art background, I feel that I can provide inspiration for others in a similar position. It can be easy to quit, but extremely rewarding to continue with what you are passionate about. I hope to create pieces I am proud of, and pieces that I will continue to enjoy even as time passes on.
Throughout my time at UTRGV, I find that some of my best work can come from collaborating with others and discussing my ideas with others as well. While the project itself may be individualistic, it is important to get a fresh pair of eyes and various perspectives. Without this, there is a chance that we create something that only makes sense to ourselves. I have noticed that successful design maintains more universal meaning. Overall, I think it is incredibly important to maintain an open mind and explore different options. Sometimes as designers, we can stick to working in a way that is comfortable and familiar to us, but this is not always the best option for every solution. I think it is essential to be able to adapt and adjust to any situation thrown our way.
