Exhibit Work

For my exhibit, I decided to create a children's book with an associated publishing logo. I’ve always found illustrations paired with elements of graphic design really fascinating. I’m especially a fan of abstract shapes and textures, which I incorporated into my own story. Creating a series of illustrations was something I had always wanted to do but never got around to doing. Because I’m mostly a text-and-layout based designer, this was a totally new experience.

Kitty’s First Climb is a simple story about a kitten climbing up his first tree. As he climbs, new friends are made, and experiences had. In the end, he reaches the top and sees a view he’s never seen. Creating this book was more laborious than I had previously imagined. It was a long process of brainstorming for story ideas, storyboarding, finding the right typefaces and colors, and compositing. I had to be an illustrator, writer, and designer – all for a single project. Although it was tough work, I appreciate what I learned along this process and feel much more comfortable creating illustrations.
