Artist Statement

personal logoMy name is Leslie Cavazos. I am a South Texas Graphic Designer. I haven’t been doing art all my life. In fact, I didn’t know about graphic design until about 6-7 years ago. As a high school senior, I joined the art club. At first, it was just to hang out with my friends. As time passed, I grew an appreciation for art and learned how to draw. Although, I never really thought that I could have a career in the arts. Like many, I fell into the mindset that those who do are unable to find jobs to sustain themselves. Throughout my academic journey, I have had many eye-opening experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. I took a chance on Graphic Design and I’m not looking back.

I was introduced to the imaginative world of design when I was researching degrees after a failed start to a Computer Science degree. I was taken aback by the different everyday things that are made by graphic designers. It is amazing how many ways there are to solve the same problem. I am inspired every day by different brands, their packaging, video games, and my peers to name a few. I aspire to solve problems, inspire others, and create memorable designs that tell the story of my future clients. As a designer, the elements that I gravitate toward are bright colors, fun shapes, and clean lines. I am a firm believer in always pushing myself. I try my best to challenge myself to always do better with my designs. In the future, I hope to blend aesthetics and practicality when I bring my client’s vision to life. I would also like to provide resources to others so they may succeed and create opportunities for themselves.

In art, each person has their own creative process. During my design process, I write down and draw everything that comes to mind no matter how silly or “unconnected” things may seem. There is no such thing as a bad idea, only a jumping-off point for the continuous cycle of brainstorming. Another part of my process is that I am constantly changing my environment, even if it is just the next room over. Sometimes I find that if I am in the same environment, my thoughts are going to be the same. Keeping my surroundings fresh, helps keep my mind fresh and I can keep my creativity flowing. I also like to utilize Pinterest and Behance for creative inspiration. Overall, I am a passionate designer who would like to create memorable projects that solve problems and tell a story.
