Artist Statement
Hello, I am a 20-year-old Mexican American artist. I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, and studied at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I am a Graphic Design senior and will graduate in Spring of 2023. I have always liked to draw since I was little but unaware of how to make it a career. It wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I researched what a graphic design degree could do for me.
My primary medium of art is digital illustration. I also do a bit of painting and pencil work from time to time. I’ve learned that throughout my artist journey, I am adaptable to different art styles. The majority of my digital illustrations are currently fanart of my different interests. Fanart allows me to reimagine characters and settings that are not always explicitly stated in the original media. Some of my original art starts as doodles, and they gradually become a world of their own after I add more to it. I use software such as Procreate on an Ipad or Photoshop on my computer.
My graphic design works show my journey through design. I can look back at how much I have improved from my first projects where I was barely learning the tools of Adobe Illustrator to my latest ones. The project I am most proud of is the marketing campaign for a fictitious brand. I created logos, made posters and billboards, point of sales design, social media marketing, and made an app. I learned a lot about Illustrator and Photoshop through these projects that I know will help me in the future. This journey has helped me a lot with understanding corporate designs and artistic designs. As a graphic designer, I want to incorporate digital illustrations more in my work. I believe illustration can play a major role in marketing and engaging viewers.
