Artist Statement

personal logoSeveral instances in my childhood have influenced my admiration for art and design. Watching my grandmother draw on open envelopes, various flowers are strewn across the packets of information that now lay empty but are now filled with reaching vines and colorful flora. Paper napkins, once clean, are now lined with ink outlines of cowboys’ side profiles and forest backgrounds drawn by my dad. Coloring books that were meticulously colored with broken and peeled crayons were a collaboration with relatives. These few instances are one of many that exposed me to the world of art and creation. It was during my last year in middle school when I started to pursue art as a hobby and a way to destress. Art became something I wanted to improve on, as vague as it was. It has since branched off to Graphic Design as a career I want to pursue. Through layout and logo design, I was able to find something that not only interested but also challenged me as an individual.

My work process starts with snacks in hand and music playing in headphones to set the mood for the brainstorming and sketching process. Numerous references are open in tabs for poses, color combinations, and layouts spread across one to two screens. The workspace is messy but I know where my things are placed. Any issues that arise, are written down several times and looked up online. Sticky notes are placed around the work space, posing possible solutions. Those that seem plausible are written over and over in different situations. When it seems highly possible with the best possible outcome for all parties, then it is selected, applied, and continuously adjusted before completion.

I want my work to be comfortable in terms of legibility and thrilling when it comes to how it is perceived. “How will others feel about this?” and “Does the content come across well?” are questions that I ask myself before completing the project. I want my designs to bring some form of comfort to others through the design and content.
