Artist Statement

personal logoAs a queer Hispanic artist, my objective is to represent marginalized identities through my work. I look forward to having more opportunities to work with other creative professionals who share my vision for more inclusivity in media. Pursuing both design and film studies has allowed me to strengthen my understanding of visual communication and formal analysis. Learning about the history of how media influences public perception of marginalized communities has granted me a sense of awareness about my place in the world and it has helped me appreciate the artists, writers, and directors who are dedicated to depicting these realities genuinely. Furthermore, it has encouraged me to make my own contributions via the connections I make and what I create.

I believe the combination of graphic design and media analysis reinforces how important it is to be a part of the narrative that influences how people see their lives. The process behind every piece of creative work is not always meant to be easy so the initiative I will be taking for my Capstone project should allow me to work outside of my comfort zone and be able to present a product that should encourage people to look outside of theirs. I believe that having the mindset to challenge yourself and being capable of looking into perspectives outside of your own allows you to have a more elaborate and dignified understanding of the world and sympathize with diverse or unconventional experiences.
