I’ve recently been watching more TV. I was never the type to dedicate some time to watch something unless I was somewhat forced to in a social setting; my problem was getting antsy with the constant thought that I was wasting my time, thinking there was something I could be making or refining. I guess you could say its about being a stereotypical workaholic Virgo, or it could be that I’m a passionate creator, maybe it’s an underlying undiagnosed mental illness! Whatever it is, I realized that good work, work that defines someone and catches attention, cannot be made without taking a second and aligning yourself. Being rushed and antsy does churn out production but it may take a hit on the quality, it’s something that I realized when watching a good episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Watching the fictitious lives of other professions on TV made me see that the common denominator of the average successful handsome surgeon, lawyer, or White House operative is the mixture of the slight antsy need to keep going up along with the ability to stop a minute to catch your breath and see things from different angles in order to keep getting better. Every design project is like it’s own story arc in a show, it has it’s setup, its problems, its climax, and its resolution. I take it that it’s my job see it through to be “story arc” good enough that your fun girl friend keeps telling you you have to start the show. I sit down, breathe a little to align myself, and help my design make me and the audience happy, and hopefully keep them talking about it for years to come.
