Mary Garcia

I fell in love with art when I started reading books in the 2nd grade due to the illustrations that were on the pages. My mother worked at a thrift store and always brought second-hand books for me to read. Combined with my love of reading and writing, I realized in high school that I could study both as graphic design is the joining of type and illustrations. My favorite part about my work is the research that comes with it. I love exploring new work that inspires me to create refreshing ideas. Typography matters the most to me since I have spent the past 13 years writing journals and being fascinated by the lettering in books. I especially like to establish hierarchy and balance with the type I use. My biggest inspirations are movies and shows. I spend my time analyzing the visuals in a film and think about how I can incorporate that into my projects. I also try my best to find graphic design all around me whether it’s movie posters, album covers, billboards, logos, etc.
Besides graphic design, I also enjoy oil painting. In painting, I look at objects and break them down into shapes and colors. I have incorporated this technique into graphic design in order to simplify the illustrations that I do. I believe that doing less is more, and I like to challenge myself to use as little color as possible to create interesting projects. Overall, I value opinions on my work because it helps me improve and see the mistakes I hadn’t seen before.
