Bernadette Breidenbach

Hi, I’m Bernadette! I enjoy understanding the world around me at its core. I find exhilaration in not only in what I am able to interpret, but what others are thinking and how they are able to express that sentiment. For the most part, I would say I enjoy everything- as long as there is one’s own truth showcased. I am painfully so, an optimist. As a child I drew as much as I could, whenever I could. This included drawing on my bedroom walls, my school assignments, boxes that were being used, you name it! Rules were never ever my forte. I am endlessly inspired by animals, their intelligence, their beauty, their reactions… Before becoming a graphic design student, I was a biology major, and then an English major. It makes sense to me that my fuel includes animals, passionate writing, lettering, and life around me. My work is important to me because what my words are not able to describe, my being is able to express. I am fascinated by the idea that no matter how much you would like to emulate someone else’s style, you are always going to leave a piece of you in the work. I would open books for drawing inspiration, and I would simply rewrite appealing images and fonts until I knew I got it right. Even if I did not have stationary at hand, I had the urgency to trace appealing subjects with my fingers. I was falsely led to believe that pursuing art in college was a waste of time but choosing to be here was one of the best decisions I could have ever made for myself. Ernest Hemingway once said, “where a man feels at home, outside of where he’s born, is where he’s meant to go”. There is something very enduring about creating digital work because it will live on in a computer file and many people will be able to visualize the printed outcome. The key to success is to know what interests you and it is important to not care about what other people think of you and take the world by storm and showcasing your reality. My hope is that my art can appeal to a wide range of interests and that they can see some version of me through it. I am able to solve problems by tuning out the world around me and listening to what my body, and soul direct me towards, and it is sometimes best to think not with your head, but with your heart.
