Designer Statement

personal logoData privacy has become a large source of concern in recent times. Every day, people’s personal data is collected and exploited. Some people don’t know their personal data is being taken without their consent, but most people are aware of it and actively choose to ignore it. This is because most don’t think that, as individuals, they can do anything to keep their personal data protected from large corporations and other powerful entities. But what the public and the government need to understand is that, as a collective unit, the public has the power to demand change and demand corporations to take accountability.

My design concept focuses on creating an infographic campaign that aims to inform the public, corporations, and lawmakers about the general attitude surrounding data privacy in recent years. This aligns with the theme of “StrikeThrough,” as it is a critique on common big business practices. After conducting some research, I focused on the statistic I thought to be the most important and would grab most people’s attention. That statistic is the center piece of the infographic and made clear for everyone to see. From there, more statistics were added around it, that I felt supported the main statistic the best. Most of the imagery was made to bring emphasis to the idea of security.

My first goal is to make people feel more validated in their concerns over data privacy, and also make people feel more compelled to do more to protect it. Secondly, and most important of all, I would hope this infographic also compels lawmakers to support stricter laws regarding keeping personal data safe. Overall, this was a very interesting project, different from what I usually make. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. And I think going forward in my professional career this might be a new avenue in design that I could explore further.
