Artist Statement

personal logoMy name is Korissa Chavez, and I am a senior graduating with a BFA in Graphic Design. I was born in raised in the Rio Grande Valley to a family of six. Art has always been part of my childhood from drawing on a piece of paper to making arts and crafts with my mom. I enjoyed watching cartoon shows and animated movies and as a kid, I would always draw my favorite characters or try to draw in the art style. As I got older my passion for art grew, especially during my middle school years when I took art classes that taught me many different mediums and different techniques. Everywhere I went there was a sketchbook on me, and I drew whenever inspiration hit me. But it was during my high school years where I learned about digital art from my computer class where we had to use Adobe programs like Illustrator and Photoshop to create simple designs. It wasn’t until my first year of college that I became interested in graphic design when I was still undecided about my degree at the time. Once I heard about degree work, it brought me back to high school when I had so much fun in my computer classes working with Adobe. I could see myself working in this field of work, and the rest was history. My artworks tends to be cartoonish and cute style with vibrant colors that catch people's attention. I start by sketching a sketch on a piece of paper or on my iPad Procreate and then transfer the sketch to Illustrator or Photoshop. Then I start on the finalized version while also making adjustments if I need to and after that, I step back and ask one of my family members or anyone around me what they think of the design. I do this to get another person’s view from their perspective. I want others to feel the emotion that I’m conveying through my designs. As an artist, it’s important to express one’s emotions and ideas through art and design. While also making sure others can see those emotions and ideas
