Jorge Martinez Medrano

Artist Statement
My name is Jorge Medrano. I am 23 years old and I was raised in McAllen, Texas. I am a Graphic Design major and I study at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. With graduation coming up this December 2023, it got me thinking about why I am doing what I am doing and how I got this far into my college career. I have always loved art, but never knew how to make my own art nor how to share my art around with others. Like many other people my age, I grew up drawing and coloring. I was not good at drawing when I was younger and to this day, it is still not my strong suit. While I am passionate and inspired by art, it is not traditional art, such as drawing or painting. If anything, I am passionate about graphic design and I believe I have mastered a lot of skills throughout my years of being in college regarding graphic design.
I always liked design, but never knew the basics of designing nor how to start. It wasn’t until I reached high school that I was introduced to graphic design and photography. I took a graphic design class and 2 photography classes in high school and that was when I was introduced to the wonderful world of Photoshop and photography. I learned a lot of skills about photography and Photoshop in high school and that was when I knew that I wanted to keep studying and get better at this craft in my college years. Throughout my college years, I was introduced to different methods and new skills in Photoshop as well as in other Adobe programs. I like to mix and match different aspects from different images to create something that is unique and mine. Art comes in many different shapes, sizes and mediums. A lot of people think that art means it is only drawing and painting, but that is not the case. I do not consider myself an artist in traditional terms, but I do consider myself an artist through graphic design terms. I believe that graphic design will forever be timeless and will forever be used everywhere and anywhere. I hope that once I graduate, I will be able to pursue a career in photography or anything else that is related to graphic design.
