Artist Statement
I’m Jocelyn Trevino and my journey as an artist and designer began in elementary school when I would attend Saturday morning art classes, but stopped drawing for a few years before picking it up again in middle school and haven’t stopped drawing since then. During my childhood and teenage years, I was exposed to a lot of media that highly influenced my art and decision to pursue art and design. During my childhood, I always loved watching cartoons, but more specifically magical girl cartoons like Sailor Moon, Winx Club, Lolirock, Star Darlings, Miraculous, and many others. These shows helped me have a big imagination for how they would tell the stories and how the art style was so expressive.
However, what made the most impact on my art was My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and anime. During middle school and high school, I was obsessed with My Little Pony, which was mainly because of the bright colors, characters, and interesting stories. This inspired me to start creating my characters with their own backstories and colorful designs. Anime took my interest much further. When I got into anime I was amazed by the art style how far the creators would go with the lore and how much they could show with their series. With inspiration from My Little Pony and anime, I was motivated to create my own stories and characters I took inspiration from my favorite characters. My Little Pony and anime also directly impacted my art style. For many years I had a very similar art style to My Little Pony, making my characters have big eyes and have the same shading technique as the characters would have it. When my art improved and even today, my art style changed into a more anime-inspired style but I still kept a similar eye shading technique that it used in the My Little Pony characters and bright colors I would often see in the series, which led my art style to have a very cartoonish or “cute” style.
Apart from being inspired by childhood series, my art also takes inspiration from true events in my life or my friends, family, pets, or people I knew at some point in my life. Many characters are based or share personality traits of my closest friends or family and sometimes they would help me add more depth to the character. Creating art based on true events is something I always enjoyed doing as I get complete creative freedom on how I want my message to show, not only that but I add a bit of my personality to it whether it is by color palette or technique.
