I’m Jocelyn Trevino and this is my exhibition statement. When the project was assigned, I had a lot of ideas surrounding the idea of a restaurant such as a cafe or someplace similar. All my life I loved dogs and I often lived with them daily during my early childhood when I lived in Mexico. I had multiple dogs and I would often feed the street dogs whenever they would come up to the gate near my house. So, I could say, they were a large part of my life. When I learned that cat cafes were a thing, I took inspiration from them and my local teahouse I often visit, to create a dog-friendly teahouse.
My dog, Nugget served as the main inspiration for my exhibition, when it came to the color palette, the menu, the name of the establishment, the mascot, the poster, and everything else. Ever since I adopted him, he made my life brighter and happier, so I wanted the teahouse to be as dog-friendly as possible down to the color palette and food that would serve as a way to show appreciation to him. Naming the teahouse “Bundle of Sunshine” is a reference to Nugget’s personality as he’s very energetic and always happy to be around the people he likes. When creating the color palette, I wanted to stay away from the colors that teahouses used which were neutral, and wanted the feel of the teahouse to be bright and welcoming to dogs. I decided to use colors that only dogs could see which are blue and yellow, with a few tones of brown to add a warm feeling to the atmosphere, which is what I did when creating my poster. The dog treat section of the menu was based on Nugget’s favorite treats, that I’m sure other dogs would love!
The physical location of the teahouse has a more modern look to it, with blue being the primary color. The teahouse has a playroom in the back where dog owners can go to let their dogs socialize and play with other dogs, of course, with fun toys to play with! Dog owners will be able to not only order food for themselves but for their fluffy friends as well, made with dog-friendly ingredients, and at an affordable price. To prevent any incidents, dog owners will have to fill out a form online confirming that their dog is not aggressive towards people and other dogs, has all vaccinations, has no contagious diseases, and is fully responsible for their dog. Once they fill out the form, they’ll get a personalized and unique QR code that will need to be scanned upon entering the teahouse.
