988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24/7 in the United States. 988 has been designated as the new dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.



Resources for Students

Mental Health

  • The UTRGV Counseling Center is committed to making mental health services more accessible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Below are resources available to support your mental health, coping ability, general adjustment, and overall wellness. Instagram: @UTRGVCOUNSELINGCENTER

    • Telemental Health Counseling: Secure and confidential online therapy for individuals, couples, and groups therapy is available. Tele-health mental health counseling sessions are held over UTRGV Microsoft Teams or UTRGV ZOOM.

    • In-Person Counseling: The availability of in-person counseling at one of our centers will depend on the current pandemic situation in our local area. If you are unable to do counseling online, contact our office so we may make other arrangements.

  • Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP): The CRP hosts online support groups and other programs to assist students in the process of recovery from addictions. BASICS and CASICS are judgment-free programs designed to assist students in learning more about their use of alcohol or marijuana.

  • Vaqueros Crisis Line: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. 24/7 confidential assistance over the phone when you are in an acute emotional crisis.

  • My Student Support Program (MySSP): MySSP offers 24/7 real-time support resources (counseling/case management) for students who are out of the state or out of the country.

    Access services by:

    • Downloading the FREE My SSP app from the Apple or Google Play stores
    • Calling 1-866-743-7732 or 001-416-380-6578* (if outside the US or Canada)

  • Thrive at UT: Thrive is a FREE wellness self-help app specifically developed for college students.

    • Download “Thrive at UT” from the Apple or Google Play stores.
    • Once downloaded, select “UTRGV” as your home campus to unlock the app tailored to this university.


  • Therapist Assisted Online (TAO): TAO is a private online library of behavioral health resources that includes interactive tools to help students understand and manage their moods and life stressors.

Health Monitoring Kiosks

Did you know there are two health monitoring Kiosks available for you? Kiosks provide you with blood pressure, heart rate, and weight readings. You can find them located at:

  • Edinburg Location: Marialice Shary -Shivers (MASS) Bldg. on the second floor in the east stairwell corridor next to the Human Resource Office.
  • Brownsville Location: In the Cortez Building in front of the Student Health Services Department.

*During COVID-19, kiosks are being sanitized on a regular basis to comply with applicable regulations.
