September is National Preparedness Month!
Dear UTRGV Family,
September is National Preparedness Month — a time to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies.
Since life-threatening situations can occur at any moment, we want to share some critical resources UTRGV uses and offers to promote your safety on campus:
Ready UTRGV
To help you better prepare, the UTRGV Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is launching a new initiative: Ready UTRGV.
This OEM-led effort will include outreach events each fall and spring semester, offering expert-level training and opportunities for our UTRGV community to build essential skills.
There are many things you can do year-round to help prepare ahead of a disaster, and Ready UTRGV is the place to learn or reinforce them. By increasing awareness, knowing what you can do and what resources are available, you can empower yourself and become more capable in any situation.
CampusShield
This convenient and user-friendly mobile app directly connects you with UTRGV Police, helping cut down on response time. Some of the app features include requesting a safety escort, reporting safety concerns or suspicious activity, and more. Your location services are only used when you signal for assistance and are never passively tracked. Learn more about CampusShield.
Emergency Procedures
The University has clearly defined procedures for various emergency situations, including:
- Active Shooters
- Severe Weather
- Medical, and
- Fires.
We highly encourage you to review these procedures, which will help prepare you to act during a crisis.
Emergency Alert Notifications
The UTRGV Emergency Alert System sends urgent and timely mass communications to students, faculty, and staff of an active major campus emergency or high-risk incident. Prompt notifications are sent through, emails, text (SMS) messages, voice messages, University owned personal computers, and UTRGV’s Facebook page.
OEM is Ready for You
Our office supports and protects the entire UTRGV community by preparing for, responding to, and recovering from all major emergencies or disasters affecting the University. All month long, we will be sharing more information about these and other resources related to emergency preparedness, mental health and wellness, and campus safety. As a reminder, all these resources are accessible from utrgv.edu/commitment.
Remember: you’re not alone. UTRGV has the people and infrastructure in place to ensure everyone on campus can live, work, and enjoy everything our great university has to offer without thinking about "what if".
Here’s to a safe and successful semester!
