RE: Holiday Energy Conservation
As we approach the holiday season, we are preparing for opportunities to become good stewards of our resources by participating in energy initiatives that support lowering our overall electrical consumption. This includes turning off computers, lights, and raising air conditioning temperatures during unoccupied periods at the campuses. We ask for your assistance in implementing these initiatives below:
- Students:
- Turn off lights and electronic devices in common areas and meeting rooms when not in use.
- Student Housing: Raise temperatures in dorm rooms and apartments to 76 degrees, and 78 degrees when you leave for an extended period of time. Additionally, please assure that compact refrigerators are disconnected when/where applicable.
- Faculty and Staff:
- Turn off office lights, ceiling fans, computers, electronic devices, and empty personal refrigerators and disconnect power. Refrigerators with compact freezers need to be defrosted in advance to prevent water leaks and allow for cleanup if/when necessary.
- Power down and unplug copiers, printers and space heaters that are not intended to be used.
- Central Utility Plant:
- The air conditioning in general spaces that are not critical or research related will be entered into unoccupied mode.
- We encourage the campus community to dress appropriately to the ambient temperatures that would be suitable to your work environment if you choose to work at your office during the holiday period.
- The Central Utility Plant will not have the ability to adjust temperatures for individual requests during this time.
- Information Technology:
- Computers and printers that will not be used during the holiday period should be turned off at power strips. This includes all computer labs, where possible.
- Housekeeping Department:
- On the day before a holiday period is scheduled to begin, campus housekeeping staff will be conducting a final walk-through in all buildings to assure that all lights and ceiling fans have been turned off in offices, classrooms, restrooms, and other general areas.
