Referendum Results and Next Steps
Dear UTRGV Family,
Our students have spoken. And by a 60.5% to 39.5% margin, they have voted to support a referendum that will help supplement UTRGV’s larger goal of transforming our campus experience.
The referendum will increase the intercollegiate athletics fee starting Fall 2022 to help support:
- Expansion of our spirit program
- Establishment of marching bands
- Establishment of a women’s swimming and diving program
- Establishment of a football program
Please join us in thanking the more than 5,700 students who exercised their right to vote over the three-day election (Nov. 8-10). This was, by far, the largest turnout for a student body election at UTRGV.
Now that our students have voted in support of the referendum, the next step is to receive final approval from The University of Texas System Board of Regents, likely after the first of the year.
Thank you for your support
We’d be remiss if we didn’t say thank you to the Student Government Association for conducting a respectful and professional referendum. They represent everything a university could want from a student leadership group, and UTRGV should be proud of their incredible service to our institution.
And, as we’ve mentioned in a previous message, we’d also like to thank all the students, faculty, and staff who participated in our referendum presentations. This is an exciting time for UTRGV, and we are grateful for the opportunity to help spur this transformational process and take UTRGV to new heights.
Lastly, we encourage everyone to come out and support our women’s volleyball team as they take on Tarleton State at 7 p.m. tonight at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Thank you for your support, and V’s Up!
Sincerely,
Dr. Maggie Hinojosa
