COVID-19 Update: Shelter-In-Place Orders
All four counties and some individual cities in the Rio Grande Valley have issued shelter-in-place orders for their residents.
UTRGV would like to remind our campus community that the university is exempt from these orders because we perform essential government functions as a state education institution. Our responsibility to provide services essential to the public during these orders was reiterated in a letter Wednesday by the Texas Attorney General.
As of Monday, UTRGV has proactively moved as many employees as possible to work from home, which means we are already following the guidance provided by these county/city orders regarding essential staffing.
Nonetheless, we know this can be a confusing time. Below is guidance in your role as a member of the UTRGV community during these shelter-in-place orders.
We Are Here for You
While most of UTRGV’s operations are already being conducted remotely, our campuses remain open only to provide services essential to students, faculty and staff.
Please rest assured that the university is working diligently to ensure all CDC social distancing guidelines are being observed at all our campuses and off-campus sites.
How Does This Affect Me?
Students
- Should continue staying home and continue taking classes remotely.

- May also access student services by phone or online communications.
- Should continue reporting to work at our campuses/facilities, if deemed essential.
- Should continue working from home, if previously authorized to do so.
- Should carry a UTRGV ID at all times as evidence of your essential status with the university.
Employees
