Message from UT Health RGV on Coronavirus: Personal travel to affected areas
Dear campus community:
Given the significant health concerns raised by the Coronavirus outbreak, UT Health RGV strongly recommends against personal travel to affected areas.
If you travel away from campus for personal reasons, please implement good public health measures. Upon your return, you will be asked to complete a brief form to document your travel history and to assess whether additional screening or evaluation may be necessary. If you travel to and return from an area under restriction, you will not only need to complete this form but also notify your supervisor, and you may be required to self-isolate for 14 days.
Social Distancing
To prevent and slow the spread of coronavirus, UTHealthRGV recommends that you take these steps to monitor your health and to practice social distancing:
- Do not take public transportation, taxis, or ride-shares.
- Postpone large social gatherings.
- Avoid crowded places (such as shopping centers and movie theaters) and limit your activities in public.
- Use online shopping or delivery services when possible.
- Limit food sharing.
- Keep your distance from others (about 6 feet, if possible, as recommended by the CDC).
- Avoid touching your face, eyes, or nose.
- Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds and use 60% rubbing alcohol-containing hand sanitizers after touching surfaces.
If you are having symptoms of fever, cough, and difficulty breathing:
- Seek medical attention from your health provider, from UTRGV Student Health or UTRGV Employee Health
If you are advised to remain at home in self-isolation:
- Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also watch for cough or trouble breathing.
- Stay home and avoid contact with others.
- Do not go to work or school for this 14-day period.
- Discuss options to continue working or studying at home with your supervisor or faculty member.
- Return to Student Health or Employee Health at the conclusion of 14 days for clearance to return to normal duties.
Extended Clinic Hours
To facilitate access to medical care, Student Health sites in both Edinburg and Brownsville are now open on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM to Noon. Employees may visit our UT Health RGV site on Jackson Road in Edinburg from 8:00 AM to Noon on weekends.
Controlling the rapid spread of Coronavirus is everyone’s responsibility. UTHealthRGV certainly understands that this may require adjustments in customary cultural practices such as embracing as a greeting and shaking hands. To control Coronavirus, let’s start a new practice and share V’s up!
Together, and with everyone’s support, we will get through this current public health emergency.
